Allotment

Not everyone has a plot but you can use flower beds and even annual vegetables that flower beautiful instead of annual bedding flowers which you can't eat but only throw away!
We only have a small plot for growing vegetables! I am only root varieties in this area. I have spring onions, Brown skin onions, radish, Carrots and in a deep pot next to the plot i have new potatoes!
Radish sprung 3 weeks after sowing them. I still haven't had any foliage from the carrots so I don't know if their growing yet!
In the green house I grew from seeds spring onions and onions and planted them in the plot on 10th April unfortunately the cats dug up the onion seedlings the next day which is rather annoying! To stop the cats returning I have cut up bamboo cane about 6 inches long a pushed them in the soil so cats can't find space to squat! Remember to remove them when a large among of foliage has grown or this could damage your crop growing under the soil. Luckily a friend gave us some onion bulbs so Ashley planted them for me! There is one seedling left so were doing a small experiment to see which gives us the best crop. (watch this space for photos)

Pots and containers

Because I have sown some root crops in the plot there is no space for my other crop such as gem lettuce, spinach and rocket. I sowed these from seed and they have grown lovely! I have planted gem lettuce in a very large deep round pot and spinach in a square pot, waiting for rocket to sprout a bit more then I will plant them in with the spinach. What's so great about these being in pots it is very easy to keep the slugs and snails out! To do this spray WD40 around the rim of the pots they don't like this. I haven't don't this myself yet but I have been lucky so far!

Herbs

Grow your herbs in a herb pot and place on your patio or balcony and take clippings when you need it!
If you do have your own vegetable plot then you will be surprised to know that there not only great for flavouring, medicine and of course a lovely cup of tea depending on what herb your growing! The are a natural crop booster some herbs encourage a much greater chance of larger and more flavoured crop! Also they are a natural pesticide. So great for the environment, your pocket and most important your health.
More to come on Herb beneficials

Peppermint tea anyone!
